Robot Lawn Mower Support

Robot mowers are the most setup-sensitive machines we sell. Once a mower is mapped correctly, sited correctly, and receiving a clean positioning signal, it will usually run for a season with nothing more than blade changes and a wash. Almost everything that goes wrong traces back to one of those three things rather than to a fault in the machine.

This page covers what typically fails, the setup fundamentals that prevent most of it, and where to go for a specific symptom.

What typically goes wrong

  • Positioning loss. RTK and GNSS mowers need a clear view of the sky. Tree canopy, rooflines, and narrow side passages cause dropouts, drift, and mowers that stop mid-job and report a signal error.
  • Docking and charging failures. Usually an approach path that has become obstructed, a station that has shifted out of level, or contacts filmed over with grass sap.
  • Map and boundary problems. Boundaries drawn too tight, exclusion zones that overlap a route the mower needs, or passages narrower than the machine's stated minimum.
  • Repeat stalls in one location. A slope at the limit of the machine's rating, a soft or wet patch, a root or drain cover, or a lip the wheels cannot climb.
  • Cut quality complaints. Nearly always dull blades, cutting height set too low for the grass type, or a mowing schedule too infrequent for the growth rate.
  • Connectivity. The mower is on the lawn and the router is in the house. Range at the dock is a real constraint, and app pairing depends on 2.4 GHz availability.

Setup fundamentals

Antenna and sky view

On RTK systems, the reference antenna needs an unobstructed view of the sky — not a partial one. Mount it clear of rooflines, chimneys, and canopy, at the height the manufacturer specifies. A mower that works in spring and fails in July is usually watching leaf cover close in over its antenna.

Check signal quality at the worst point in the yard, not the best. The narrow passage down the side of the house is where the fix will fail.

Dock placement

The station needs level ground, a straight clear approach, and the clearance figure stated in your model's manual on each side. Site it out of standing water and away from sprinkler throw. A dock tucked against a wall for tidiness is a dock with degraded positioning at the exact point the mower needs it most.

Boundary mapping

Map at a walking pace, in good signal conditions, and leave margin. Boundaries drawn hard against a fence or flower bed give the mower no room to correct, and every small positioning error becomes an edge collision or a refusal to enter. Check that any passage the mower must use meets the minimum width in the manual — this is the single most common cause of "it won't go to the back lawn."

Slope and terrain limits

Every mower has a maximum slope rating, and it assumes dry grass. Wet ground, loose soil, and moss all reduce real-world capability below the rated figure. Terraced yards, deep drainage swales, and raised root systems need exclusion zones rather than optimism.

Blades and cutting height

Robot mowers cut a little at a time and rely on sharp blades to do it cleanly. Replace on the manufacturer's schedule, not when they look blunt. Set cutting height for the grass type and raise it in heat and drought.
