Robot snow blowers work in the harshest conditions of anything we sell, and they are judged on a narrow window — the machine either clears the driveway before you need to leave, or it did not. Most support contacts are about readiness and traction rather than outright faults.
What typically goes wrong
- The machine did not start when it should have. Usually an autostart threshold set higher than the snowfall, a schedule that did not account for overnight accumulation, or a unit that was left unpowered between storms.
- Traction loss on ice. Packed snow that has thawed and refrozen is a different surface entirely. Machines that handle a foot of fresh powder can be defeated by a quarter inch of glaze.
- Chute and auger clogging. Wet, heavy snow at temperatures near freezing packs into the auger housing and chute. This is the most common in-storm stoppage.
- Battery performance in cold. Runtime falls in low temperatures, and below a certain point lithium packs will not accept charge at all. This is protective behavior, not a fault.
- Positioning under snow cover. Snow changes the surface the machine navigates over, and drifts can obscure boundary markers or reference points.
- Seasonal changeover. On multi-function platforms, an incomplete module swap or a mapping profile left on the mowing configuration causes confusing behavior.
Setup fundamentals
Clear the work area before the season, not during the storm
Anything that will be buried needs to be dealt with in autumn: hoses, extension leads, planters, decorative edging, and loose gravel. A machine that hits a buried object under snow cannot see what it hit, and gravel through an auger is a repair rather than a clog.
Surface matters more than snow depth
Paved and sealed surfaces give the best results. Loose gravel drives should be run with the clearance set high, and even then expect stone pickup. Confirm your model's rating for the surface you actually have before the first snowfall.
Set autostart thresholds deliberately
Decide what depth should trigger a clearing run, and set it. Left at a default, the machine will either start for a dusting or wait until accumulation exceeds what it clears efficiently. Multiple shallow passes beat one deep one on almost every platform.
Keep it powered and staged
The machine should be on charge and in position before a storm, not retrieved from a shed once snow is falling. Confirm the dock area stays clear of drift and that the charging contacts are dry.
Plan the discharge direction
Chute direction needs to account for where snow is thrown — not into the road, not against the garage door, not onto a path you just cleared. Reset it when wind direction changes materially.
Cold-weather battery expectations
Expect reduced runtime through the coldest part of winter. If the machine will not charge in deep cold, check your model's stated charging temperature range before reporting a fault — most refuse charge below a threshold by design.
