Robot won't connect to WiFi or pair with the app

Pairing failures are the most frequent first-day support contact across every category we sell, and they are rarely a fault in the robot. In the large majority of cases the machine is fine and the network is doing something reasonable that the robot cannot cope with.

This guide applies to mowers, pool cleaners, vacuums, window cleaners, and snow blowers alike — the pairing process is broadly the same across all of them.

The single most common cause: 5 GHz

Almost every home robot connects on 2.4 GHz only. It cannot see a 5 GHz or 6 GHz network at all. Modern routers ship with both bands sharing one network name, and hand devices between them automatically — which works beautifully for phones and breaks pairing for robots.

The failure looks like this: your phone is connected and working, you enter the password, and the robot times out. Nothing indicates a band problem, because from the phone's point of view everything is fine.

What to do

  • Best fix: in your router settings, give the 2.4 GHz band its own network name, then connect the robot to that. This is permanent and stops the problem recurring after every router reboot.
  • Quick fix: temporarily disable the 5 GHz band, complete pairing, then re-enable it. Most robots stay on 2.4 GHz once paired.
  • If your router offers band steering or "smart connect," turn it off during pairing.
  • On a mesh system, stand near the node the robot will actually use, not the main router.

Work through these in order

1. Check the password, properly

Retype it rather than trusting autofill, and watch for the usual traps: a capital letter at the start that your keyboard added, a trailing space, and the characters that look alike — zero and capital O, one and lowercase L. Enter it somewhere visible first if your app hides it.

2. Confirm the network type is supported

  • Captive portals — any network that shows a sign-in page in a browser will not work. Robots have no browser.
  • Enterprise networks requiring a username as well as a password are not supported.
  • Guest networks often isolate clients from each other, which blocks the phone-to-robot discovery step.
  • Hidden networks are unsupported on many models. Unhide temporarily to pair.
  • Phone hotspots frequently default to 5 GHz. Set yours to 2.4 GHz compatibility mode if you are pairing through one.

3. Give the app its permissions

This is the second most common cause after the band problem, and the least obvious.

  • Bluetooth must be on. Most robots are discovered over Bluetooth first, then handed their Wi-Fi credentials over that link.
  • Location permission is required by both Android and iOS before an app may scan for nearby devices or read Wi-Fi details. Denying it produces a pairing screen that finds nothing, with no useful error. Set it to "While Using the App" at minimum; some Android versions need Precise Location too.
  • Local network permission on iOS must be allowed, or the app cannot see the robot once it joins the network.
  • If you denied any of these on first launch, granting them later may require force-closing the app.

4. Check signal strength where the robot actually lives

Robots live where routers do not: at the bottom of the garden, in a pool enclosure, in a basement, on an outside wall. Take your phone to the exact spot, join the 2.4 GHz network, and see what you get. One or two bars there means the robot has less.

  • Walls, foil-backed insulation, masonry, and metal doors all attenuate heavily
  • Water is a strong absorber — pool robots and their floating platforms are a genuinely hard case
  • If coverage is marginal, a mesh node or access point nearer the dock is the real fix; repositioning the router rarely is

5. Reduce interference

The 2.4 GHz band is crowded. Microwave ovens, older cordless phones, baby monitors, Bluetooth speakers, and neighboring networks all compete. If pairing works at some times of day and not others, this is a strong lead. In your router settings, try a fixed channel of 1, 6, or 11 rather than automatic.

6. Restart in the right order

Order matters, and doing it piecemeal wastes a lot of time.

  1. Restart the router and wait for it to come fully up — two or three minutes.
  2. Restart the robot at its power switch, not just from the app.
  3. Force-close and reopen the app.
  4. Retry pairing while standing next to the robot.

7. Reset the robot's network settings

Most models have a Wi-Fi reset separate from a full factory reset — typically holding a specific button for a few seconds until an indicator changes. Use the Wi-Fi reset first. A full factory reset also erases maps, boundaries, schedules, and zones, which on a mapped machine means starting over.

Find the exact procedure in your model's manual or on its page here. Do not guess a button-hold from another brand.

8. Update, then try again

Update the app from your app store, and the robot's firmware from within the app. Pairing behavior changes with both. If an update was interrupted, the robot may be in a state where pairing cannot complete until it finishes.

If it pairs but keeps dropping

A robot that connects and then disconnects repeatedly is usually a coverage or addressing problem rather than a pairing one.

  • Assign the robot a static or reserved IP address in your router. Address conflicts after a router reboot are a common cause of daily dropouts.
  • Check whether the router's client limit has been reached on a busy network.
  • On mesh networks, a robot that sits between two nodes may be handed back and forth. Locking it to one node, where the router allows it, resolves this.
  • Confirm the drop is not simply the robot going out of range mid-job — note where it is when the connection fails.

What to record before contacting us

  • Model and serial number, and purchase date
  • Router make and model, and whether both bands share one network name
  • Whether you have a mesh system, and how many nodes
  • Signal strength on your phone at the robot's location, on the 2.4 GHz network
  • Exactly which step of pairing fails, and the exact wording of any error
  • Whether the robot has ever connected successfully
  • Whether Bluetooth, Location, and Local Network permissions are granted to the app
  • Whether it fails only in one place, or everywhere including next to the router

What to try, when to contact us, when it is a warranty claim

Try these yourself

Confirm you are on 2.4 GHz with band steering off. Retype the password. Grant Bluetooth, Location, and Local Network permissions. Check signal at the robot's actual location. Restart router, then robot, then app, in that order. Use the Wi-Fi reset before any factory reset. Update app and firmware.

It is a manufacturer warranty claim when

  • The robot's wireless hardware does not respond at all — no Bluetooth advertisement, no network visible to any device
  • A firmware update failed and left the machine unable to complete pairing, and a reset does not recover it
  • Connectivity hardware fails with no external cause, within the warranty period

The manufacturer decides the outcome, sets the coverage terms, and performs any repair or replacement.

Safety

Do not open or disassemble the machine to reach wireless components. Opening it voids the warranty on most brands, which removes the route we would otherwise use to get you a repair or replacement.
