Robot mower losing RTK or GPS signal

Signal loss is the most common serious complaint on satellite-navigated robot mowers, and it is also the one most often misdiagnosed as a broken machine. A mower that stops mid-lawn reporting weak positioning is usually telling you something true about your yard rather than something wrong with itself.

How the system works, briefly

Satellite positioning alone is accurate to a few feet — nowhere near enough to keep a mower off your flower beds. RTK closes that gap with a second receiver in a known fixed position: the reference antenna, sometimes on the charging station, sometimes on a separate mast. It watches the same satellites, calculates the current error, and sends a correction to the mower continuously.

That means three things must all work at once: the mower must see enough sky, the reference antenna must see enough sky, and the link carrying corrections between them must stay up. Signal problems are almost always a failure of one of those three, and they need different fixes.

Start here: which pattern do you have?

  • Weak or lost everywhere, including at the dock — suspect the reference antenna or the correction link. Start with Part 2.
  • Fine in the open, lost in specific spots — this is sky view at those spots. Start with Part 3.
  • Was fine, degraded over weeks — something changed. Leaf growth is the usual answer. Start with Part 4.
  • Comes and goes with no pattern in place — suspect the correction link or interference. Start with Part 2 then Part 5.

Before anything else, open the app and note the reported satellite count and fix quality at the location where it fails. A reading taken on the patio proves nothing about the corner by the fence.

Part 1 — Check the mower's own antenna

  • Confirm the antenna area on the mower is clean. Grass clippings packed over it, a thick layer of mud, or a sticker or accessory placed over it all attenuate the signal.
  • Check for physical damage if the mower has taken a hard knock or been driven under something low.
  • Confirm nothing has been added to the machine that sits above the antenna.

Part 2 — Reference antenna and correction link

Sky view at the reference antenna

This is the most common root cause, and the easiest to get wrong at install. The reference antenna needs a genuinely open view of the sky in all directions — not the view from where it was convenient to mount it.

  • Mounted below a roofline, under an eave, or against a wall, it loses a large portion of the sky and the satellites low on that horizon.
  • Chimneys, satellite dishes, gutters, and metal flashing reflect signals and create errors that are worse than simple blockage.
  • Mount at the height the manufacturer specifies, on a rigid mount that does not sway. A mast that moves in wind introduces error directly.
  • If it is on the charging station, the station's placement is now a positioning decision, not just a convenience one.

The link between base and mower

Depending on the platform, corrections travel by long-range radio, by your Wi-Fi network, or over cellular. Each fails differently.

  • Radio or LoRa link: range depends on line of sight. Buildings, dense hedging, and metal fencing between base and mower cut it. Check the manufacturer's stated range and compare against your actual yard, not its square footage.
  • Wi-Fi delivered corrections: the base needs a stable connection. Test coverage at the base's location, not in the house. See robot won't connect to WiFi or pair with the app.
  • Cellular or network corrections: an outage upstream shows up as positioning loss with no visible local cause. Check whether the app reports the correction service as connected.
  • Confirm the base has power and its status indicator shows a healthy state. A base on a switched outlet or a tripped GFCI produces a mower that has simply lost its reference.

Part 3 — Sky view across the yard

If positioning is good at the dock and fails in specific places, map where. Walk the yard with the app open and note the spots where quality drops.

  • Under tree canopy. The worst case, and it gets worse as leaves come in. Wet foliage after rain attenuates more than dry.
  • Narrow side passages. A corridor between house and fence leaves a thin strip of visible sky. These passages fail far more often than open lawn.
  • Close to walls. Beyond blocking sky, a wall reflects signals — the receiver gets the same signal twice, slightly delayed, and computes a position that is confidently wrong. This is why a mower can drift into a bed near a wall while reporting a good fix.
  • Beside metal. Metal fencing, sheds, and vehicles are strong reflectors.

Where the sky view genuinely cannot be improved, the fix is usually to route around it: exclude the area, widen the boundary margin so drift cannot reach a bed, or accept manual mowing in that patch.

Part 4 — Things that changed since installation

  • Leaf-out. A system commissioned in early spring is working with bare branches. By midsummer the same yard is a different radio environment. Degradation over four to eight weeks in late spring is almost always this.
  • Growth generally. Hedges, climbing plants over a mast, a shrub that reached the antenna.
  • New structures. A pergola, awning, trampoline, shed, solar array, or car regularly parked in a new spot.
  • The antenna moved. Wind, a ladder, or contractors. Confirm it is still where and how it was installed.

Part 5 — Interference and conditions

  • Heavy rain and wet canopy degrade reception measurably. A fault that only appears in bad weather may be environmental rather than mechanical.
  • Snow or ice on either antenna blocks signal. Clear both.
  • Strong local radio sources — some LED floodlights, cheap power supplies, and certain solar inverters — can raise the noise floor. If the problem tracks with something switching on, that is a real lead.
  • Space weather occasionally degrades satellite positioning worldwide for hours. If everything checks out and the problem appeared suddenly across an entire day, wait a day before pursuing it further.

Part 6 — Firmware and remapping

Positioning behavior is a frequent target of manufacturer firmware work. Confirm the mower, the base, and the app are all current, and let updates finish completely before testing.

If the map was created in poor signal conditions, the map itself carries that error. After you have fixed the underlying sky view or link problem, a fresh mapping run in good conditions is often what finally settles things.

  • Exactly where in the yard it fails, and whether it is repeatable
  • The exact error text or code from the app
  • How the reference antenna is mounted — a photo showing what is above and around it is worth more than a description
  • Which correction link your system uses, and whether the base reports connected
  • When it last worked properly, and anything that changed around then

Try these yourself

Clean the mower's antenna area. Confirm the reference antenna is clear of obstruction, mounted at the specified height, undamaged, and unmoved. Confirm the base has power and reports connected. Walk the yard and record where the fix degrades. Check for new growth or new structures. Update firmware, then remap in good conditions.
