A robot that gets stuck in random places has a general problem. A robot that gets stuck in the same place every time has a specific one — and that is good news, because a repeatable fault is a solvable fault. The location is the diagnosis.
This guide applies across categories. Mowers, vacuums, pool cleaners, window robots, and snow blowers all strand for the same four underlying reasons: terrain, traction, sensing, or the map.

Same spot every time — work through this guide in order. The answer is almost always physically present at that spot.

Different spots, no pattern — this is more often traction, sensing, or battery. Skip to Part 2 and Part 3.

Same general area, varying exact spot — usually terrain or ground conditions across that area rather than one object.

Started recently, in a place that used to be fine — something changed. Ground softened, furniture moved, a brush wore out, grass grew.
Before anything else: go and look at the spot. Not the app map — the actual location, with the robot sitting in it if possible. More problems are solved in that thirty seconds than in an hour of settings changes.
Part 1 — Read the location
Stand at the spot and work out what is different about it. By category, the usual suspects:
Robot mowers
- A slope at or beyond the machine's rating — remember ratings assume dry grass
- Soft, wet, or mossy ground where wheels dig in rather than grip
- An exposed root, drain cover, irrigation head, or paving lip the wheels cannot climb
- A transition between surfaces — lawn to path, lawn to bark, lawn to gravel
- Grass much longer or wetter than the rest of the lawn, in a shaded or boggy patch
- A dip that grounds the deck and lifts a drive wheel clear
Robot vacuums and mops
- Cable runs, charger leads, and phone chargers left on the floor
- Rug fringing and tassels, or a high-pile rug edge the robot climbs and beaches on
- Furniture the robot fits under going forward but cannot reverse out of
- Door thresholds and floor-level transitions at the limit of its climb height
- Chair and table legs in clusters, which form a trap rather than an obstacle
- Very dark flooring or a black rug, which cliff sensors can misread as a drop
Robot pool cleaners
- Shallow steps, tanning ledges, and swim-outs — the classic stranding structure
- Main drains, ladders, and skimmer housings that catch a wheel or brush
- Tight corners in irregular pool shapes
- Currents from a running pump pinning the unit against a wall
- On surface skimmers: steps and stools catching the hull, which is exactly what adjustable anti-stranding bars exist to fix
Robot window cleaners
- Deep mullions, seams, and frame profiles the machine cannot cross
- Decals, films, or repairs that break the suction seal
- Panes below the machine's minimum size
Robot snow blowers
- Glazed ice where packed snow has thawed and refrozen
- Buried objects — hoses, edging, loose gravel
- Drift depth beyond a single-pass clearing capacity
Part 2 — Traction and drive
If the spot looks unremarkable, the machine may be arriving there with less capability than it should have.

Wheels, tracks, and treads. Worn tread on one side turns a manageable slope into a stall. Check both sides and compare.

Wound debris. Hair, string, grass, and fishing line around an axle is the most common cause of a machine that pulls to one side or drives unevenly. Check every rotating part.

Brushes. On pool cleaners, worn scrubbing brushes cost climbing grip directly. On vacuums, a jammed brush roll increases drag until the drive cannot overcome it.

Free rotation. With the machine safely off, confirm each wheel turns freely by hand and that neither is stiff or seized.

Ground clearance. Anything packed into the underside — compacted clippings, leaves, mud — reduces clearance and grounds the machine on obstacles it used to clear.
Part 3 — Sensing
A machine that stops in a place with no obstacle is often seeing one that is not there.

Clean every sensor window and lens. Film, dust, water spots, and pollen all produce phantom obstacles. This is the single highest-yield thing on this list.

Cliff and drop sensors read reflected light. Dark flooring, black rugs, and deep shadow can read as a drop-off, so the machine refuses to cross. If the stall point is a dark patch, this is very likely your answer.

Bumpers must move freely and spring back. A bumper held partly compressed by debris makes the machine believe it is permanently against something.

Lift and tilt sensors trigger on uneven ground and can stop a machine that is not actually in trouble.

Direct sun interferes with some optical sensors. If stalls only happen at a particular time of day, in a particular spot, note that — it is a real pattern.
Part 4 — The map
Sometimes the machine is right and the map is wrong.

Passage width. Check the route into the area against your model's stated minimum. A passage narrower than that will strand the machine repeatedly no matter what else you fix.

Boundaries drawn too tight. With no margin, ordinary positioning error puts the machine into a bed or against a wall. Pull boundaries in slightly and the problem often disappears.

Overlapping exclusion zones can leave the machine with no legal route out of an area it is already in.

Stale maps. Furniture moved, a bed dug, a path laid — remap after any material change.

Poor conditions at mapping time. On satellite-navigated machines, a map built with a weak fix carries that error permanently. See robot mower losing RTK or GPS signal.
Part 5 — When it is the hardware
These point at a fault rather than a setup issue:
- One drive wheel does not turn under power while the other does
- Grinding, clicking, or a motor audibly straining with nothing obstructing it
- The machine stalls on flat, clear, dry ground with clean sensors
- A wheel is loose, wobbles, or sits at a visible angle
- A stall or motor fault code persists after every environmental cause is ruled out
Fix in this order

Remove the cause if you can — clear the object, bundle the cable, brush the algae, adjust the anti-stranding bars, fill the dip.

Restore the machine — clean sensors, clear wound debris, replace worn brushes or treads.

Exclude the area if the cause cannot be removed. A no-go zone around a permanent hazard is a legitimate fix, not a defeat.

Adjust the setup — widen boundary margin, raise cutting height, change the schedule so it works drier ground.

Report it to us if the machine still strands on ground it should handle.
What to record before contacting us
- Model and serial number, and purchase date

A photo of the exact spot, ideally with the machine stranded in it — this is the most useful thing you can send
- Whether it is the same spot every time
- What the surface is: grass, tile, gravel, ice, water, glass — and whether it was wet or dry
- The exact error code or light pattern shown when it stops
- Whether both wheels turn freely by hand
- What you have already cleaned, cleared, or replaced
- When it started, and what changed around that time
What to try, when to contact us, when it is a warranty claim
Try these yourself
Go and look at the spot. Remove or exclude whatever is there. Clean all sensors and clear debris from wheels, axles, brushes, and the underside. Check wheels turn freely and treads are not worn unevenly. Confirm passage widths and boundary margins against the manual. Remap if anything has changed.

- A drive wheel or its motor fails — no drive on one side, grinding, or seizure
- A wheel assembly is loose or misaligned with no impact damage
- Sensors misreport with clean, undamaged surfaces
- A stall fault code persists after every environmental and setup cause is ruled out
- The machine will not traverse terrain plainly within its published rating

Safety
Switch the machine off before touching wheels, brushes, blades, or impellers — cutting and rotating parts can start without warning. Wear gloves when clearing blade housings. Never enter a pool to retrieve a cleaner that is still running; remove power first. Do not attempt to retrieve a window robot from an upper-floor exterior pane — call us instead. Do not open or disassemble any machine: it voids the warranty on most brands, which removes the route we would otherwise use to get you a repair or replacement.
