Does the Yarbo Snow Blower Work on a Gravel Driveway?

Yarbo lists gravel among the surfaces its two-stage Snow Blower works on. Here is why two-stage machines suit gravel, what to do before the first snow, and where the limits are.

Last updated: October 2026

Yes. Yarbo lists paved, concrete and gravel as surfaces for its Snow Blower module. It is a two-stage machine, which is the type suited to gravel, because the auger gathers snow without scraping the ground the way a single-stage paddle does. Good results on gravel still depend on preparing the driveway before winter.

Can you use any snow blower on gravel?

Not every type. The difference is whether the part that gathers snow touches the ground.

  • Single-stage blowers use a rubber-edged paddle that sweeps the surface and throws snow in one motion. On pavement that gives a clean scrape. On gravel it picks up stones and throws them along with the snow.
  • Two-stage blowers use a metal auger to pull snow in, then a separate impeller to throw it. The auger housing rides slightly above the surface, so it takes the snow and leaves the stones.

That is why the standard advice for gravel is a two-stage machine. More on the two designs in single-stage vs two-stage snow blowers.

What does Yarbo say about gravel?

Yarbo's specifications for the Snow Blower module list:

Yarbo figure Snow Blower module
Stage type 2-stage
Surfaces Paved, concrete, gravel
Snow types Dry, wet, packed
Clearing width 24 in (600 mm)
Intake height 12 in (300 mm)
Throw distance 6 to 40 ft
Rated slope 36% (20°)
Operating temperature -13°F to 113°F

So gravel is a supported surface by the maker's own listing. The Y40 Snow Blower and Y40P Snow Blower both use this module.

Why does a robot change the gravel question?

A person behind a snow blower feels and hears when the machine starts picking up stones, and lifts the front. A robot follows its map. That makes preparation more important, because the machine will drive the same route every time. A driveway that is graded and packed before winter gives the robot a consistent surface to work on.

It also helps in one way. A robot that clears little and often is working on a few inches of snow sitting on a base, not digging into a deep layer that has frozen into the stones.

How should you prepare a gravel driveway?

Do this in fall, before the ground freezes.

  1. Grade it. Fill potholes and ruts. Level high spots. A smooth surface is the single biggest factor.
  2. Pack it. Drive on it, or have it rolled, so loose stone settles.
  3. Remove large loose rocks and anything that sits above the surface.
  4. Mark the edges. Driveway stakes show where gravel ends and lawn begins once everything is white.
  5. Map on bare ground. Set the robot's work area while you can see the edges.
  6. Check the scraper bar. Yarbo's Scraper Bar is wear resistant steel with a serrated edge. Inspect it at the start of the season.

Should you leave a base layer of snow?

Many gravel driveway owners let the first snowfalls pack down into a thin frozen base, then clear on top of it for the rest of the winter. The packed layer holds the stones in place. This is common practice with walk-behind two-stage blowers. For how to set clearing height on a Yarbo, follow Yarbo's manual for your module, and ask us if you want us to confirm a setting with Yarbo before you rely on it.

What about thrown stones?

Any snow blower can throw a stone that gets into the auger. Reduce the risk:

  • Aim the chute away from the house, cars, windows and the road. The Yarbo chute turns from -10° to 190°, and the deflector angle adjusts from -5° to 50°.
  • Keep people and pets clear while it runs.
  • Keep the surface packed. Loose stone is what gets picked up.
  • Carry spare shear pins. A stone that jams the auger will break a shear pin, which is what the pin is for. Yarbo sells a set of 8 shear pins and cotter pins. See what shear pins do.

Does gravel affect traction?

The Yarbo Core runs on tracks, which spread weight over a long footprint. For winter, Yarbo sells a heavy duty Snow Track rated to -13°F, optional Anti-Slip Studs for ice, and Weighted Side Plates at 9.4 lb each for more traction on slopes and uneven ground. Which of these a gravel drive needs depends on its slope and how icy it gets. Our guide to Yarbo winter traction parts explains when each helps.

How much gravel driveway can it clear?

Yarbo rates the module for up to 6,000 sq ft per charge on the Y40 and 7,000 sq ft on the Y40P, in 1 inch of snow. Long rural driveways are often where gravel is found, so do the math: length times width.

  • 300 ft x 12 ft = 3,600 sq ft
  • 500 ft x 12 ft = 6,000 sq ft
  • 800 ft x 10 ft = 8,000 sq ft

Deeper or wetter snow covers less per charge. The robot recharges itself and continues, so a long drive is a matter of more cycles. See how to measure your driveway.

What is hard on gravel for any snow blower?

  • Fresh, loose gravel. A newly topped drive has stones sitting free on the surface. Let it pack before winter.
  • Deep ruts. The housing bridges the rut and leaves snow in it, or drops into it and digs.
  • Thaw cycles. When the surface softens in a warm spell, stones loosen. Go easier until it refreezes.
  • The first storm. With no base yet, the first clearing is the one most likely to move stones.

What about slopes on a gravel drive?

Gravel driveways are often rural and often hilly. The Snow Blower module is rated for 36% (20°). That is the number to check, not the Core's 70% mowing rating. Measure the steepest section. See Yarbo snow blower on hills.

Could a plow be better for your gravel drive?

Sometimes. A plow blade pushes snow and does not throw anything, so stones are not a projectile risk, though a blade set too low will push gravel into the lawn. Yarbo makes a Snow Plow Blade that, per Yarbo, is built for wet and packed snow and also moves dirt, gravel and mulch. See Yarbo plow blade vs snow blower.

What is the short version?

Gravel is on Yarbo's list of supported surfaces, and the two-stage design is the right type for it. Grade and pack the drive in fall, aim the chute with care, keep shear pins on hand and check the grade against 20°.

Yarbo covers the Core and modules with a 2-year limited warranty and ships by free freight. If you are unsure about your drive, send us its length, width, slope and surface and we will tell you plainly whether it is a fit.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Yarbo snow blower work on a gravel driveway?

Yarbo lists paved, concrete and gravel as supported surfaces for its two-stage Snow Blower module.

Why is a two-stage snow blower better for gravel?

Its auger gathers snow without sweeping the ground, so it leaves the stones. A single-stage paddle contacts the surface and can pick up and throw gravel.

Will a snow blower throw gravel?

Any blower can throw a stone that enters the auger. Keep the drive packed, aim the chute away from people, cars and windows, and keep spare shear pins.

How do I prepare a gravel driveway for a snow blower?

Grade and pack it in fall, remove large loose rocks, mark the edges with stakes and map the robot's work area on bare ground.

How much gravel driveway can a Yarbo clear per charge?

Up to 6,000 sq ft on the Y40 and 7,000 sq ft on the Y40P in 1 inch of snow, per Yarbo. It recharges itself and continues.

Can the Yarbo Snow Plow Blade be used on gravel?

Yarbo says the Snow Plow Blade is built for wet and packed snow and also moves dirt, gravel and mulch. It requires the Yarbo Snow Blower Module.
