How to Measure Your Driveway in Square Feet for a Snow Robot

Snow robots are rated in square feet per charge. Here is how to measure a driveway of any shape in ten minutes and what to do with the number.

Last updated: October 2026

Multiply length by width. A driveway 60 feet long and 20 feet wide is 1,200 square feet. For an odd shape, split it into rectangles and triangles, measure each and add them up, or trace it on a satellite map. Then add the walks and pads you want cleared and compare the total with the robot's coverage per charge.

Why does square footage matter?

Because that is how snow robots are rated. Yarbo lists its Snow Blower at up to 6,000 square feet per charge on the Y40 and 7,000 on the Y40P, in 1 inch of snow. To know whether your driveway is one charge, half a charge or two, you need its area.

It is also the number contractors, sealcoaters and pavers ask for, so it is worth writing down.

What do you need?

  • A long tape measure, a measuring wheel, or your own paces.
  • Paper and a pencil.
  • Or a phone or computer with a satellite map.

To measure by pacing, walk 10 normal steps, measure the distance and divide by 10. Most adults step about 2.5 feet.

How do you measure a simple rectangle?

  1. Measure the length from the street to the garage.
  2. Measure the width side to side.
  3. Multiply.

Example: 50 ft x 18 ft = 900 sq ft.

If the width changes, measure at three points, average them and use that.

How do you measure an odd shape?

Break it into simple pieces.

Shape Formula Example
Rectangle Length x width 60 x 12 = 720 sq ft
Triangle Base x height ÷ 2 20 x 10 ÷ 2 = 100 sq ft
Circle 3.14 x radius x radius 3.14 x 15 x 15 = 707 sq ft
Half circle Circle ÷ 2 707 ÷ 2 = 353 sq ft

Flared apron at the street. Treat the flare as a rectangle plus two small triangles.

Parking pad or turnaround. Measure it as its own rectangle and add it.

Circular drive. Area of the outer circle minus area of the inner island.

Curved lane. Measure along the center line for the length and multiply by the average width.

How do you measure with a satellite map?

Online map tools let you click points on an aerial photo and read off distance or area.

  1. Find your home in a satellite view.
  2. Choose the measure tool.
  3. Click around the edge of the driveway to close the shape.
  4. Read the area.

It is quick and good to within a few percent. Tree cover and shadows can hide edges, so check one side with a tape.

What else should you add?

A robot can clear more than the driveway. Add every surface you want done:

  • Front walk: length x width. A 40 ft walk at 4 ft wide is 160 sq ft.
  • Path to the mailbox, bins or side door.
  • Patio or the area around a hot tub.
  • A strip in front of the garage doors.

Write down the driveway alone and the grand total.

What do typical driveways measure?

Driveway Dimensions Area
Single car, short 10 x 40 ft 400 sq ft
Two car, short 20 x 40 ft 800 sq ft
Two car, average 20 x 60 ft 1,200 sq ft
Three car with apron 30 x 50 ft 1,500 sq ft
Long single lane 12 x 200 ft 2,400 sq ft
Long lane plus pad 12 x 300 ft + 30 x 30 ft 4,500 sq ft
Rural lane 12 x 500 ft 6,000 sq ft

How do you compare your number with a robot's rating?

Yarbo's figures are for 1 inch of snow. Use them like this:

  • Your total is well under the rating. One outing in light snow, with energy to spare when snow is deeper or wetter.
  • Your total is near the rating. Expect a recharge mid-job in anything but light snow. The robot handles that on its own: it docks, charges from 20 to 80% in 90 minutes, and resumes.
  • Your total is over the rating. It will take more than one charge every time. That can still work if timing is not tight, since the robot can start early.
Yarbo figure Y40 Snow Blower Y40P Snow Blower
Area per charge, 1 in of snow 6,000 sq ft 7,000 sq ft
Clearing width 24 in 24 in
Intake height 12 in 12 in
Throw distance 6 to 40 ft 6 to 40 ft

Deeper and wetter snow reduce area per charge. Yarbo does not publish figures for other depths. See how much snow a robot snow blower can handle.

How many passes will it take?

The clearing path is 24 inches, or 2 feet. Divide the driveway's width by 2 for a rough count of passes, and add a couple for overlap. A 20 ft wide driveway is about 10 to 12 passes, each the length of the drive.

What else should you measure while you are out there?

  • The steepest slope. Yarbo rates the Snow Blower for 36% (20°). See Yarbo snow blower on hills.
  • The narrowest point. Gates, gaps between walls and parked cars.
  • Distance from an outdoor outlet to where a dock could sit.
  • Where snow can be thrown, and how far that is from the drive. The throw is 6 to 40 ft.
  • The surface. Paved, concrete or gravel.

Take a few photos. If you send us those measurements and photos, we can give you a straight answer on fit.

How do you convert to acres?

One acre is 43,560 square feet. Driveways are small next to lawns: a 6,000 sq ft driveway is about 0.14 acre. If you are also sizing a mower, measure the mowed lawn separately. Our guide to robot mowers for 1, 2 and 5 acres covers that side.

What are common mistakes?

  • Measuring the lot, not the pavement.
  • Forgetting the apron by the street.
  • Leaving out walks you want cleared.
  • Using a single width on a drive that flares.
  • Mixing feet and yards. One square yard is 9 square feet.

What should you do with the number?

Write down three things: total square feet, steepest slope and surface type. Those decide whether a snow robot fits, and which one. Then look at the Y40 Snow Blower and Y40P Snow Blower, or try the Find Your Robot quiz.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the square footage of my driveway?

Multiply length by width. For odd shapes, split the driveway into rectangles and triangles, calculate each and add them together.

How many square feet is a typical two-car driveway?

About 800 to 1,200 square feet, for a 20 foot wide driveway that is 40 to 60 feet long.

How much driveway can a Yarbo clear per charge?

Up to 6,000 sq ft on the Y40 and 7,000 sq ft on the Y40P in 1 inch of snow, per Yarbo.

Can I measure my driveway from a satellite map?

Yes. Online satellite maps have a measure tool that reports area when you click around the driveway's edge.

Should I include walkways in the measurement?

Yes, if you want the robot to clear them. Add each walk's length times its width to the total.

How many square feet are in an acre?

43,560 square feet.
