How Much Does Leaf Removal Cost? What Drives the Price and Your Options

Leaf removal prices vary with yard size, tree cover, how many visits you need and whether leaves are hauled away. Here is how to estimate your own cost and compare it with doing it yourself.

Leaf removal cost depends on five things: the size of the yard, how many trees drop leaves on it, how many visits you need through the fall, whether leaves are hauled away or mulched in place, and where you live. Services usually price per visit, per hour or per season, so ask for quotes on the same scope. Doing it yourself costs time and equipment instead. A leaf machine that mulches or blows leaves on a schedule can replace several paid visits each fall.

"How much does leaf removal cost" is one of the fastest rising searches in our niche this month, up more than 150,000% in the US. We do not publish price figures, because they vary so much by region and they change. Instead, here is how to work out what leaf removal costs you, and how to compare options.

What makes leaf removal more or less expensive?

Factor Pushes the price up Keeps it down
Yard size Large lots Small lots
Trees Many mature trees, oaks that drop late Few trees
Visits Weekly through fall One cleanup at the end
Leaves Wet, matted, piled in beds Dry, on open lawn
Disposal Bagging and haul away Mulching in place or curbside pickup
Access Slopes, fences, tight gates Open, flat ground
Timing Peak weeks in late fall Early or flexible scheduling

How do services usually charge?

  • Per visit, based on the yard and the leaf load that day.
  • Per hour for crew time, plus disposal.
  • Per season, for a set number of visits.
  • Add-ons such as gutter cleaning, bed cleanup or haul away.

Ask each company for a quote on the same job: how many visits, whether beds are included, and what happens to the leaves. Otherwise the quotes are hard to compare.

How do you work out your own leaf removal cost?

  1. Count last fall's visits or the hours you spent raking and blowing.
  2. Add disposal: bags, yard waste stickers, trips to a drop-off site.
  3. Add equipment you used: blower fuel, rakes, a tarp, a mulching blade.
  4. Value your time at whatever an hour is worth to you.
  5. Total it, then compare with quotes and with a machine.

Can you skip removal and mulch the leaves instead?

Often, yes, and it is cheaper. Research from Michigan State University found that mulching leaves into the lawn with a mower did not harm the turf and helped it. The key is to mulch regularly, before the layer gets too thick. Our posts does mulching leaves kill grass and mulching leaves vs bagging cover the details.

If you mulch in place, removal costs drop to the leaves in beds and on hard surfaces.

What machines cut the cost?

Machine What it does Your time
Rake and tarp Moves leaves by hand High
Handheld or backpack blower Moves leaves fast Medium
Mulching mower Shreds leaves into the lawn Medium
Mowrator S1 with mulching blades Mows, mulches or vacuums leaves into a 70 L bag, by remote Low to medium
Yarbo Leaf Blower Blows leaves off lawns and paths on a schedule Low after setup

Makers' figures: Mowrator rates the S1 leaf vacuum at 931 CFM with its mulching blades and a 70 L bag. Yarbo rates the Leaf Blower module at 174 mph and 607 CFM, and the same Yarbo Core mows and clears snow with other modules.

When does a machine pay off against a service?

It depends on your numbers. A machine makes the most sense when:

  • You have many trees and need several visits every fall.
  • The machine does other jobs too: mowing in summer, snow in winter.
  • You are on a large lot where per-visit pricing adds up.
  • You want it done often, so leaves never mat down on the lawn.

A service makes more sense when you have a small yard, a few trees, and want one cleanup a year.

What about leaves on slopes and in beds?

Slopes are where leaf removal gets expensive and risky, because crews work slower and DIY gets dangerous. A remote control mower lets you clear a slope while standing on flat ground; Mowrator rates the S1 4WD for 75% (37°) slopes. See how to clear leaves on a slope.

Beds and corners usually still need a person with a blower or rake.

When should leaf removal happen?

Most yards need two or three passes: early fall, peak drop, and a final cleanup after the last trees, often oaks, have dropped. Leaving a thick layer on the lawn into winter can smother grass. See when to do the last leaf cleanup before winter.

What questions should you ask a leaf removal service?

Before you sign up, ask:

  • How many visits are included, and what triggers an extra one?
  • Are beds, gutters and hard surfaces included, or only the lawn?
  • What happens to the leaves: hauled away, mulched in place, or left at the curb?
  • What if it rains or snows on the scheduled day?
  • Is there a minimum charge for a small yard or a final cleanup?
  • Do they carry insurance for work on your property?

Get the answers in writing. Two quotes that look far apart often cover different work.

Does doing it yourself really save money?

It saves cash, but not always time or effort. Raking a large lot with many trees can take several full weekends each fall, and handling heavy wet leaves is real work. Count the hours honestly. If you would rather spend fall weekends elsewhere, a machine that runs without you, or a service, may be worth more to you than the cash saving.

Frequently asked questions

How much does leaf removal cost?

It varies by region, yard size, tree cover, number of visits and disposal. Ask services for quotes on the same scope, and compare them with your own time and equipment.

Is it cheaper to mulch leaves than remove them?

Usually. Mulching leaves into the lawn with a mower avoids bagging and haul away, and Michigan State University research found it did not harm turf.

How often should leaves be removed?

Most yards need two or three passes in fall, plus a final cleanup after the last trees drop. Mulching often prevents thick layers.

Can a robot clear leaves?

Yes. The Yarbo Leaf Blower module, rated by Yarbo at 174 mph and 607 CFM, blows leaves off lawns and paths on a schedule.

Can a mower vacuum leaves?

The Mowrator S1 can with its mulching blades, which Mowrator rates at 931 CFM, collecting into a 70 liter bag.

What makes leaf removal expensive?

Large yards, many mature trees, slopes, wet matted leaves, frequent visits and hauling leaves away.

Should I remove leaves before snow?

Yes. A thick layer left over winter can smother grass and makes snow clearing messier.
