Slopes collect leaves and make them dangerous to stand on. Here is how to clear a hill safely, how to measure the grade, and which machines are rated for it.
Last updated: October 2026
Work from the top down, clear when leaves are dry, and do not stand on a leaf-covered slope if you can avoid it. Wet leaves on a grade are as slippery as ice. The safest method is a machine rated for the angle that you control from level ground or that drives itself.

Three things happen on a hill that do not happen on flat lawn.
So a slope needs clearing more than flat ground does, and it is harder to do.
Slope ratings are given two ways: percent grade and degrees. They are not the same number.
To measure, lay a straight board down the slope, hold a level on it and measure the gap, or use the level tool on your phone laid on the board. Our guide how to measure lawn slope walks through it.
| Percent grade | Degrees | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|
| 18% | 10° | Gentle, easy to walk |
| 36% | 20° | Clearly a hill |
| 45% | 24° | Hard to push a mower across |
| 70% | 35° | Steep bank |
| 75% | 37° | Difficult to stand on |
| 100% | 45° | Hands-and-feet steep |
If hand tools are what you have:
Stop if the ground is wet. No leaf is worth a fall.
Every maker publishes a maximum slope. Buy by that number with margin to spare, not by how the machine looks.
| Machine | Maker's rated slope | How it is operated |
|---|---|---|
| Mowrator S1 2WD | 45% (24°) | Remote control |
| Yarbo Core with Leaf Blower | 70% (35°) | Drives itself on a map |
| Mowrator S1 4WD | 75% (37°) | Remote control |
| Mowrator S1 4WD Wide Wheels | 85% (40°) | Remote control |
| Mowrator S1 4WD Grip Tread | 119% (50°) | Remote control |
Ratings are from Yarbo and Mowrator.
You stand on flat ground and steer. The Mowrator S1 4WD has four independent brushless motors with 1,000 W of traction power, per Mowrator, and is rated for 75% (37°). Fit the Mulching Blades and it vacuums and shreds leaves at 931 CFM, either returning them to the lawn or collecting them in a 70 L bag.
For the steepest ground, the Grip Tread edition is rated for 119% (50°). Its semi-solid TPU tires have a 12 mm tread and need no air. Mowrator notes one limit worth knowing in late fall: the Grip Tread tires stiffen below 14°F (-10°C) and perform worse after long exposure to damp.
Mowrator states the remote reaches up to 400 meters, and recommends staying within about 100 meters (300 feet) so you can see the machine clearly.

The Yarbo Core runs on tracks, and Yarbo rates the Leaf Blower for 70% (35°). You map the slope in the app as a work area and the robot moves leaves off it with 174 mph air at 607 CFM. Nobody stands on the hill.
Because gravity already carries leaves down, a blower works with the slope: set the area so leaves go downhill toward the edge you want.
Follow the maker's manual for your model first. As general practice:
Mulch where the layer is thin: the upper slope. Shredded leaf pieces protect soil and feed the grass that holds the bank. Collect where the layer is deep: the bottom band. A deep mat there will kill turf and can lead to bare soil that washes in spring. See mulching leaves vs bagging.
Leaves pack into ditches and swales. Those are also where a machine is most likely to get hung up. Mowrator lists 3.94 inches of obstacle clearance for the S1 4WD, for roots, ruts and curb edges. Walk the area first, move fallen branches and mark stumps or rocks hidden under leaves.

Measure the slope, compare it with the maker's rating, and choose a method that keeps you off the wet leaves. For more on steep ground in general, read mowing steep slopes safely.

Use a machine rated for the grade that you control from level ground or that drives itself, and clear when leaves are dry. Wet leaves on a slope are very slippery.
Start at the top and work down. Move leaves across into rows, then send each row downhill onto a tarp.
Mowrator rates the S1 2WD for 45% (24°), the S1 4WD for 75% (37°), the Wide Wheels edition for 85% (40°) and the Grip Tread edition for 119% (50°).
Yarbo rates the Leaf Blower for slopes up to 70%, which is 35 degrees.
No. A 45 degree slope is a 100% grade. A 45% grade is about 24 degrees.
A thin layer of shredded leaves is fine. A deep mat smothers the grass that holds the slope, so clear the thick band that collects at the bottom.
