WYBOT vs Aiper vs Betta: Pool Robot Comparison

WYBOT and Aiper both make cordless robots that clean the pool floor, walls and waterline, plus solar skimmers for the surface; Betta makes solar surface skimmers only. Choose by the job: a WYBOT or Aiper robot for the floor and walls, and a Betta, WYBOT F1 or Aiper EcoSurfer for leaves and pollen on the surface.

What does each brand actually make?

It helps to separate two kinds of machine before comparing brands. A robotic pool cleaner runs underwater: it scrubs and vacuums the floor, and most models also climb the walls and clean the waterline, where the scum line forms. A robotic skimmer floats on the surface and catches leaves, bugs and pollen before they sink. Neither replaces the other, and many owners run one of each.

All figures come from WYBOT, Aiper and Betta. Pool sizes are the makers' ratings for each model.

Which floor robot fits my pool size?

Makers rate their robots by pool area in square feet. Measure your pool's length and width and multiply; for a freeform pool, a rough rectangle around the widest points is close enough to choose a size. Then pick a model rated above your pool, not right at the limit.

The Aiper Scuba N3 is rated to plan its own cleaning route with Aiper's AI vision, and the WYBOT S3 maps the pool and empties its debris into a bin on its dock; both are for owners who want the least hands-on routine.

Floor only, or walls and waterline too?

The entry models clean the floor. The WYBOT A1 is built for the floor of flat-bottom pools, and the Aiper Scuba 800 for flat floors up to 860 sq ft. Every other WYBOT robot in our range, from the B1 up, also climbs the walls and cleans the waterline, and so does the Aiper Scuba N1 Plus. The Aiper Scuba X1 Pro Max adds the surface as well, per Aiper, so one robot covers floor, walls, waterline and surface.

How do I measure my pool?

For a rectangular pool, multiply length by width: a 16 by 32 foot pool is 512 sq ft, and a 20 by 40 foot pool is 800 sq ft. For an oval, multiply length by width and then by about 0.8. For a round above-ground pool, multiply the diameter by itself and then by about 0.785; a 24 foot round pool is roughly 450 sq ft. For a freeform or kidney shape, take the longest length and the widest width and treat it as a rectangle; that slightly overstates the area, which is the safe direction when choosing a robot.

Also note the depth, the shape of the floor and anything a robot will meet: steps, a sun shelf, a deep end slope, or an attached spa. The makers' ratings assume a typical pool, so a pool with a large shallow shelf or many steps is worth mentioning when you ask for advice.

What about above-ground pools?

Above-ground pools usually have a flat floor and softer walls, and the entry robots are built for exactly that. The WYBOT A1 is designed for the floor of flat-bottom pools up to 1,076 sq ft, and the Aiper Scuba 800 for flat floors up to 860 sq ft, per their makers. If your above-ground pool is larger, or you want the walls and waterline cleaned too, check each model's product page for the pool types its maker lists before you choose. On the surface, the Betta SE Plus is worth a look for shallow areas, since Betta rates it for water as shallow as 3.5 inches.

How do they charge?

Most cordless robots come out of the pool to charge between cycles. Two WYBOT designs change that routine. The S2 Solar models return to a solar-powered charging dock, and the S3 docks and empties its debris into a bin on the deck. Camera models, the WYBOT C2 Vision and S2 Solar Vision, add a camera that targets dirty areas.

The skimmers all run on sunlight. Aiper says the EcoSurfer M2 skims for more than 35 hours per battery and tops up in the sun. Betta says a full charge runs its skimmers for 30 hours or more, so they keep going through the night, and the SE Plus and Neo add a wall adapter for cloudy stretches.

Which skimmer: Betta, WYBOT F1 or Aiper EcoSurfer?

If leaves, pollen and bugs are your main problem, the surface is where to start, because debris caught on top never reaches the floor. Betta is the specialist here, with four models that share the same solar skimming and differ in charging, control and the pools they suit:

Do I need a robot and a skimmer?

Not always. If your pool sits in the open with few trees, a floor robot on a regular cycle may be all you need. If trees overhang the pool, or pollen coats the water in spring, a skimmer catches most of it before it sinks, and the floor robot then has less to do. Pools with both problems are the ones where owners pair the two, either with a WYBOT Full Pool Solution bundle or by choosing a robot and a skimmer separately.

What about shipping, warranty and parts?

Shipping and warranty differ by brand, so they are worth comparing alongside the specs. WYBOT ships free within the continental US and quotes 3 to 7 business days after processing; it does not ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Rhode Island, US territories or PO boxes. Aiper ships free on most products, usually in 10 to 14 business days. Betta ships free by ground within the contiguous US and usually dispatches in 1 to 2 business days.

WYBOT gives 1 year on the A1, B1 and F1 and 2 years on its other robots; Betta gives 1 year on every model; Aiper robots carry Aiper's manufacturer warranty. For Aiper, we also carry replacement parts such as chargers, debris baskets and filters, each named for the Scuba models it fits.

How much looking after do they need?

Every robot and skimmer collects debris in a basket or filter that needs emptying, and how often depends on your trees and the season. Most floor robots come out of the water to have their basket emptied; the WYBOT S3 is the exception, emptying its own debris into a bin on its dock. Skimmers hold what they catch in a basket on the surface unit, which is quick to lift out and rinse.

• Empty the basket or filter after each cleaning cycle, or when the maker's app or indicator says so
• Rinse fine filters so they keep catching dust and pollen
• Keep solar panels clean so skimmers and solar docks charge fully
• Follow each maker's winter storage advice when the pool closes

None of these machines replace your pool's filter, pump or water chemistry. They take the physical debris out, so the rest of the system has less to deal with.

So which should you choose?

Start with the job, then the pool size. For the floor and walls of an in-ground pool up to about 1,600 sq ft, the WYBOT C1 and Aiper Scuba N1 Plus are rated for it. For a large pool up to about 3,230 sq ft, look at the WYBOT S2 family or the Aiper Scuba X1 Pro Max.
