Shoveling is hard on the heart and risky on ice. Here are the options for older homeowners, from help programs and services to machines that clear snow without anyone walking behind them.
Last updated: October 2026
The safest snow removal for an older adult is the kind where they do not shovel. That can be a neighbor, a paid service, a city assistance program, or a machine that clears snow without anyone walking behind it. The American Heart Association warns that shoveling strains the heart, and ice makes falls likely.

Two reasons: the heart and the footing.
The heart. The American Heart Association has cautioned for years that snow shoveling can raise the risk of a heart attack. Lifting heavy snow is hard arm work, people tend to hold their breath while they strain, and cold air tightens blood vessels and raises blood pressure. The risk is higher for people who are middle-aged or older, who are not regularly active, or who have a heart condition.
The footing. Snow hides ice. A fall on a driveway can mean a broken hip or wrist, and nobody may see it happen.
This is general information, not medical advice. Anyone with a heart condition or other health concerns should ask their doctor before shoveling at all.
For people who do shovel, the association's advice includes:
The simplest way to follow all of that is to not be the one shoveling.
| Option | Who does the work | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Family or neighbor | A person | Free, depends on them being available |
| City or volunteer program | A person | Many towns have programs for seniors. Call your town hall or local aging office |
| Paid snow service | A crew | Per visit or seasonal contract. Timing is theirs |
| Walk-behind snow blower | You | Less lifting, still heavy, still on ice |
| Remote control plow | You, from the door | No walking behind it |
| Robot snow blower | The machine | Runs on a map and a schedule |
It removes the lifting, which is the worst part for the heart. It does not remove the rest. A walk-behind blower is heavy, has to be steered and turned, and puts you on the same icy surface for the whole job. For a fit person it is a good tool. For someone with balance, strength or heart concerns, it still asks a lot.
It is a compact machine with a plow blade that you drive with a handheld remote. You stand in the garage or at the front door and steer.
The Mowrator S1 4WD Snow Plow Bundle is one. Per Mowrator, the blade is 31.5 inches wide, angles from -20° to 20° and lifts from 0 to 5.5 inches, and the kit includes snow chains. It suits light to moderate snow. In summer the same machine is a remote control mower, which removes another risky chore: mowing slopes.
What to know: it is not autonomous. Someone has to steer it and be able to see it. Details in the remote control snow plow.

A snow blower that drives itself. The Yarbo Snow Blower follows a map of the driveway and walks, throws snow 6 to 40 feet, and returns to its dock to recharge. Per Yarbo it clears a 24 inch path, takes in snow up to 12 inches high, and covers up to 6,000 sq ft per charge on the Y40 or 7,000 sq ft on the Y40P in 1 inch of snow.
For an older homeowner the appeal is plain: nobody goes outside. It can run on a schedule or be started from a phone. A family member who lives elsewhere can be involved in setting it up.
What to know: it needs setup before winter, which means a base station, a dock with power and a mapped route. It is rated for driveway slopes up to 36% (20°). And it is a significant purchase. See do robot snow blowers work? and the Y40P Snow Blower.
Be realistic. Setup of a robot is a job for someone comfortable with a phone app and some assembly. Often that is an adult child or a helpful neighbor doing it once in the fall. After that, daily use is simple. If you are buying for a parent, plan a weekend to install and test it before the first snow, and show them how to start, stop and check it.
Our team can talk you through what setup involves by phone or email before you decide.
| Remote control plow (Mowrator S1 4WD) | Robot snow blower (Yarbo) | |
|---|---|---|
| Someone must be present | Yes, steering | No |
| Walking on snow | No | No |
| Setup | Fit the blade | Base station, dock, map |
| Snow | Light to moderate | Up to 12 in per pass |
| Leaves banks | Yes | No, throws snow away |
| Other seasons | Mows, vacuums leaves | Mows, blows leaves with modules |

For many seniors it is the right answer, especially with a small driveway or a tight budget in a given year. A service needs no setup and no storage. The limits are timing and reliability: in a big storm you wait your turn, and the driveway may not be clear when you need to get to an appointment or when an ambulance needs to get in. Our comparison of a robot snow blower vs a snow removal service looks at both sides.
Machines clear the big flat areas. Steps, porches and narrow paths still need attention. Ideas that reduce the work:

Start with the person, not the machine. Can they safely be outside in winter at all? Do they want to operate something, or have it done? Is there family nearby to set things up? Then match the option to the answers.
If you would like to talk it through, a free consultation with us is by email or phone, +1 423-927-3776, 9am to 5pm EST. We will tell you if a service or a neighbor is the better answer than anything we sell.
Tell us about your driveway, walks, and who clears the snow today and a Yard Automation Pro will reply by email with a recommendation, or tell you honestly if none of our machines fits. It can be. The American Heart Association warns that shoveling strains the heart, with higher risk for people who are older, inactive or have heart conditions. Ask your doctor before shoveling.
Not shoveling: a neighbor, a town program, a paid service, or a machine that clears snow without anyone walking behind it.
Many towns and volunteer groups run them. Call your town hall or local agency on aging to ask what is offered where you live.
Yes. The Yarbo Snow Blower is a robot that follows a map of the driveway and recharges itself.
The Mowrator S1 4WD with the Snow Plow Kit is steered by remote control. You need to be able to see it while you drive it.
The robot is set up and controlled through the Yarbo app. Ask us what remote access options Yarbo offers for your situation and we will confirm with Yarbo.
