Robot Lawn Mower Winter Storage: What to Do Until Spring

When the grass stops growing, clean the mower, look after the battery and store it dry. Here is the routine, with what Yarbo and Mowrator owners should do differently.

Yarbo Core with the Lawn Mower Pro module

Last updated: October 2026

When the grass stops growing, clean the mower, check the blades, charge the battery to the maker's storage level and store everything dry and above freezing. A Yarbo is different: its Core keeps working with the Snow Blower, so only the mowing module is stored. For a Mowrator, the battery lives indoors and is topped up every three months.

When does the mowing season end?

When the grass stops growing. Cool-season lawns slow as daytime temperatures settle into the 40s and stop around the first hard frosts. Warm-season lawns go dormant earlier in fall. If the mower has run for two weeks with nothing to cut, the season is over.

Do the last mow on a dry day. Then start the storage routine while the weather is still mild enough to work outside.

What is the storage routine?

Six steps, in order.

  1. Clean. Remove grass, dust and leaf debris, especially under the deck. Packed clippings hold moisture and corrode metal.
  2. Dry. Let the machine dry completely before it goes under a cover.
  3. Inspect blades. Replace worn or bent ones now, so spring starts sharp.
  4. Battery. Charge to the level the maker gives for storage. Never store it empty.
  5. Store. Indoors, dry, above freezing, out of direct sun.
  6. Dock and base station. Follow the maker's guidance on whether they stay out.

Always follow your manual where it differs. The makers' own instructions come first.

How do you clean a robot mower for storage?

  • Power it off completely before touching the deck.
  • Brush and scrape clippings from the underside. Use a plastic scraper on painted surfaces.
  • Wipe the body with a damp cloth.
  • Clean the wheels or tracks. Remove wrapped grass and string.
  • Clean sensors and camera lenses with a soft cloth.
  • Clean the charging contacts.
  • Check your manual before using a hose. Water ratings differ by model and by part.

What should you do with the blades?

Robot mowers use small blades that are replaced, not sharpened. Fit new ones at the end of the season or the start of the next. Yarbo sells Cutting Blades and Bolts in packs of 40 for its mowing discs.

For a deck mower like the Mowrator S1, inspect the full-size blade for nicks and bends. Mowrator sells self-sharpening, high-lift and mulching blades in 3-packs.

How should the battery be stored?

This is the step that protects the most expensive part.

  • Not empty. A lithium battery stored flat can be damaged for good.
  • Not frozen. Store above freezing.
  • Not on the charger all winter, unless the manual says to.
  • Topped up on a schedule, if the maker gives one.
Maker Storage guidance
Mowrator Charge at least once every three months and keep the charge above 70% for long-term storage, especially in winter. In winter, store it indoors
Mowrator If the battery is cold, let it warm up indoors for 2 hours before charging
Yarbo The Core and battery are rated to operate from -13°F to 113°F

More in how cold is too cold for battery yard robots.

What is different for a Yarbo?

The Yarbo Core does not hibernate. It is a year-round base, rated from -13°F to 113°F. In winter it swaps the mowing module for the Snow Blower and keeps working. So for most Yarbo owners, winter storage means storing a module, not a robot.

Store the Lawn Mower Pro Module:

  1. Remove it from the Core, following Yarbo's instructions. It weighs 70.9 lb (32.2 kg), so use two people or a lift.
  2. Clean the deck and cutting discs.
  3. Check the blades and bolts.
  4. Let it dry.
  5. Cover it. Yarbo makes a fitted Lawn Mower Pro Module Cover.
  6. Store it indoors, off the floor if the space is damp.

Then fit the winter module. The Snow Blower Module goes on for the cold months. Our Yarbo winter checklist covers that swap.

What if a Yarbo is not used for snow?

If you live where it does not snow, or you do not own the Snow Blower Module, the Core rests for the winter.

  • Clean and dry the Core and tracks.
  • Grease the tracks. See Yarbo Track Grease.
  • Use a Core Cover. Per Yarbo it allows charging without removing the cover and has securing straps.
  • For battery level and whether to leave it docked through a long idle period, follow Yarbo's manual. Ask us if it is unclear and we will check with Yarbo.

Or give it winter work. With the Leaf Blower in late fall, or the Smart Assist Module and Tow Hitch, a Core can stay useful all year. See Smart Assist Module and Tow Hitch.

What is different for a Mowrator S1?

The S1 is a remote control mower with a removable 56V LiFePO4 battery, which makes storage simple.

  1. Clean the deck and check the blade.
  2. Remove the battery and take it indoors.
  3. Charge it above 70%. Mowrator's guidance is to charge at least once every three months and keep the level above 70% in long-term storage.
  4. Store the remote indoors as well.
  5. Store the machine dry and under cover.
  6. In spring, let a cold battery warm indoors for 2 hours before charging.

The S1 does not have to rest either. The 4WD takes Mowrator's Snow Plow Kit for light to moderate snow. See the remote control snow plow.

Where should a mower be stored?

Good Avoid
Dry garage or shed, with the battery indoors Outdoors under a tarp
Heated basement or utility room for batteries Unheated shed for batteries
On a shelf or pallet Directly on a damp floor
Under a breathable cover Sealed in plastic while damp

Mice like stored equipment. Keep the area clean and check for nesting in spring.

What about the dock, base station and wires?

  • Yarbo: the Docking Station is built for year-round outdoor use, per Yarbo, and is needed in winter for the Snow Blower anyway.
  • RTK base stations are generally left in place so the map stays valid. Moving one can mean remapping. Follow your maker's guidance.
  • Boundary-wire mowers: check your manual on whether the dock comes in and how to protect the wire ends.

What should you do in spring?

  1. Inspect blades, tracks or wheels.
  2. Charge fully. Warm a cold battery first.
  3. Update the app and firmware.
  4. Walk the lawn. Pick up winter debris and check the map still matches the property.
  5. Raise the cutting height for the first mow of the year.
  6. Watch the first run.

What are the common mistakes?

  • Storing the battery empty.
  • Leaving the battery in a freezing shed.
  • Putting it away dirty. Wet clippings corrode the deck.
  • Forgetting it until the grass is long. Order blades and parts in late winter.
  • Moving the RTK base without planning to remap.
