Ditches are steep, wet and full of hidden hazards, which makes them some of the most dangerous ground to mow. Here is how to plan, when to mow, and which machines keep you on flat ground.

To mow a ditch safely, wait until it is dry, walk it first for hidden hazards, and mow from a position where you cannot slide in. For shallow ditches, a walk-behind or riding mower within its slope rating can work. For steep or wet ditches, use a string trimmer from the top, or a remote control slope mower that you steer from flat ground. Never take a riding mower across a ditch steeper than its manual allows.

Ditch mowing questions show up in autocomplete every fall, and on X people share videos of remote control mowers working dam walls and steep banks. Here is a careful guide.
Mow when the ground is dry, after a few days without rain. Avoid early morning dew. Mowing in late spring and again in late summer keeps growth manageable, with a fall cut to tidy up before winter if needed. Check with your town or county first if the ditch is in a road right-of-way; some maintain it themselves or have rules about mowing near the road.
| Ditch | Machine | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shallow, gentle sides | Push or riding mower within its rating | Check manual slope limit |
| Moderate, firm | Walk-behind self-propelled | Mow across, keep footing |
| Steep or wet | String trimmer from the top | Slow, safe, tiring |
| Steep, long, tall grass | Remote control slope mower | You stay on flat ground |
The Mowrator S1 4WD is a remote control mower that, per Mowrator, climbs 75% (37°), cuts grass up to 51 inches tall, and clears 3.94-inch obstacles. For soft, wet ditch sides, Mowrator says its Wide Wheels edition spreads the weight for grip and less turf damage, rated for 85% (40°). For the steepest firm banks, the Grip Tread edition is rated for 119% (50°).

It depends on the machine. Many walk-behind mower makers advise mowing across a slope so the mower cannot roll back onto you, while many riding mower makers advise mowing up and down to reduce rollover risk. For a remote control mower, follow the maker's manual. In all cases, never position yourself below a machine on a slope.
On flat, firm ground at the top of the ditch or on the road shoulder (well clear of traffic), with a clear view of the mower. Keep the remote's emergency stop in reach. Do not walk down into the ditch while the mower is running. Mowrator lists an interference-resistant remote with a 5 ms response for the S1.
Mow around culvert ends by hand with a trimmer; a mower deck can catch the pipe edge. Near roads, wear high-visibility clothing, watch traffic, and do not let clippings or stones blow into the road. Never stand in the road to operate a remote mower.
If it holds water, mowing the bottom can rut it and change drainage. Many owners leave a strip of taller vegetation at the bottom, which slows water and reduces erosion, and mow only the sides. If the ditch must flow freely, clear debris by hand and keep vegetation short enough not to block it.
Ditch work is dirty. Clean the deck, check for wrapped grass or wire on the blade spindle, check fasteners, and dry the mower before storage. See remote control mower maintenance.
On private property, very steep ditch sides can be planted with deep-rooted native grasses or ground cover that need little mowing and hold the soil. That reduces erosion and work. Check local rules first for road ditches, and keep any planting low enough for sight lines near driveways and roads.
Keep a note of soft spots and hazards each year, so the next season starts with a known map of the ditch.

Mow when dry, walk it first for hazards, and use a trimmer from the top or a remote control slope mower you steer from flat ground.
Only if the ditch is within the slope limit in the mower's manual. Steep ditches are a common cause of riding mower rollovers.
It depends on the machine. Walk-behind makers often advise across, riding mower makers often advise up and down. Follow the manual for your machine.
For steep or long ditches, a remote control slope mower. Mowrator rates the S1 4WD for 75 percent and its Wide Wheels edition for 85 percent.
After a few dry days, in late spring and late summer, avoiding morning dew.
Often it is better to leave a strip of vegetation at a wet bottom and mow only the sides, to avoid rutting and erosion.
It depends on your town or county. Some maintain roadside ditches; others expect owners to. Check before you mow.
On flat, firm ground at the top or a safe shoulder, never below the mower and never in the road.
